Clare Johnston, Sr. Staff Scientist

With over 25 years’ industry experience, Clare Johnston is a leading expert in scale management and innovation. After leaving school, she joined Scottish Water, whilst simultaneously completing her degree in applied chemistry at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, kick-starting her career in applied sciences.

She joined ChampionX in 2002 as a chemist for scale, working her way up through the business and, in 2018, was promoted to senior staff scientist. A natural problem-solver, her day-to-day role involves carrying out scale risk assessments, designing and optimizing squeeze treatments, driving product strategies, and spearheading innovation to help tackle complex scale challenges for customers in the field.

Clare’s focus on scale inhibitors has become a lifelong passion. “I always wanted to be a scientist but fell into scale work early on by chance. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and have continued to pursue the topic ever since. Even after more than two decades, working on what is a mature product line continues to reveal new lessons and challenges, driving us to develop even more effective technologies through our team of dedicated ChampionX innovators.”

Beyond technical contributions, Clare is actively involved in internal initiatives promoting environmental stewardship, as well as mentoring more junior talent to become the next generation of scale experts.

She is also a strong ambassador for the business, frequently presenting at industry conferences where she shares insights from her varied work at ChampionX. Her contributions not only drive performance and efficiencies within the company but also support the energy sector in adopting innovative solutions and best practices.

On the 26th of November, Clare will be at ChemIndix 2024, presenting her paper ‘Synergistic Scale Inhibitor Formulations for Severe Carbonate Scale Systems’, which focuses on a North Sea project that effectively reduced treat rate and chemical consumption, resulting in improved sustainability and cost during operations. The presentation will highlight innovative strategies for leveraging existing chemistries to tackle challenging scale issues, demonstrating how even the toughest problems can be solved with fresh thinking and a creative approach.
