Dilshad Shaikhah: Principal Chemist at SLB Driving Innovation in Energy

From excelling as a top-performing student to becoming a Principal Chemist at SLB, Dilshad Shaikhah has built a career defined by innovation, technical excellence, mentorship and a commitment to sustainability in the energy sector. 

Dilshad began his academic career at Salahaddin University in Iraq, graduating in the top six of his Applied Chemistry course, Following the BSc he was awarded a scholarship to complete a MSc at the University of Calabria in Italy, which he completed with distinction. During this time, an Erasmus fellowship at the University of Leeds, expanded his expertise in petrochemical technology with advanced chemical engineering.  

 Dilshad’s PhD further strengthened his ability to bridge academic research with practical industry solutions. “I became a specialist in designing and testing innovative corrosion inhibitors with a strong focus on eco-friendly nanomaterials. This led to several scientific publications and a patented invention. “My research fellowship was extremely valuable in helping me to transform laboratory breakthroughs into real world applications for harsh environments,”. 

In 2022, the Royal Academy of Engineering recognised Dilshad as a Talented Young Leader in corrosion science and engineering (2022), a testament to his impact on the field. 

At SLB, Dilshad drives development of nanotechnology-enhanced solutions and environmentally responsible materials, ensuring compliance with industry standards. His work improves operational performance for clients and safeguards environmental integrity across the energy value chain. In addition to his core responsibilities, Dilshad contributes to the exploration of innovative chemical technologies for corrosion control in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) – a critical area for achieving global decarbonization goals. SLB takes a bold, practical approach to carbon abatement, partnering across the full CCUS value chain.  

Dilshad remains deeply connected to academic research, “I value the importance of the continued collaboration between academia and industry. In my role, I work closely with universities to establish partnerships that deliver research and innovation to solve real-world challenges, while building a strong talent pipeline of next generation chemists equipped with hands on experience and a fresh perspective,” 

Beyond the research, Dilshad plays a pivotal role in mentoring his colleagues and sharing knowledge at international conferences and training sessions.  His problem-solving and leadership in multidisciplinary teams are integral in advancing SLB’s technical and commercial success. “Mentoring is two-way learning, my mentees “why” questions push me to link fundamental science with the business case, it has shaped my leadership style to be clearer, more inclusive and strengthened my communications skills.
