Greig Muir, Staff Scientist 

Greig Muir, Staff Scientist at ChampionX, has built his career “bridging the gap between chemical innovation and production systems”, often while working at the sharp end of operations in some of the most remote parts of the globe.

Greig’s career journey began with a degree in chemistry, studying at both the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen. However, his hands-on experience started even earlier, at just 17, when he worked in a small lab based in Scotland that focused on oil and water analysis. That early entry into the industry set the tone for a career defined by practical problem solving and adaptability.

Since joining ChampionX over a decade ago, Greig has travelled to more than 40 countries, working in the field to support phase separation and production optimization. In his career, he has safely increased the production of wells by many thousands of barrels each day such as in a recent EVR project in Canada, and chemistries designed by him are currently applied to a significant portion of the global production.

Greig’s current role sees him designing and field-testing critical chemistries including demulsifiers and emulsion viscosity reducers (EVRs) that directly enhance oil product production. “No two days are the same. One day, I’m bottle testing in a lab to develop a tailored chemical blend. Next, I’m on-site troubleshooting separation challenges or supporting a full-scale field trial.”

Greig’s passion for fieldwork is evident, but he has also cultivated an ability to build trust on-site, bringing operators and scientists together into a cohesive, high-performing team. When both sides understand and support each other, the results are not just more efficient, they’re mutually beneficial. As Greig puts it, “chemistry doesn’t work in isolation, you need to understand the system and the team, and design something that works for both.”

Greig will take this insight to the Nigeria Oil & Gas Conference, where he’ll share ChampionX’s approach to chemistry-led production enhancement and its broader implications for production efficiency.
