Matthew Miner spotlight, Oil and Gas Technology and Automation Specialist at SLB

With a strong acumen for numbers, excellent analytical skills, and strategic thinking, oil and gas technology and automation specialist Matthew Miner has pursued a unique career path, rooted in sports analytics.

A dedicated athlete, Matthew played Division II basketball at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance, as well as an MBA in Operations Management & Data Analysis.

After graduation, Matthew launched his coaching career, which led to positions at his Alma Mater, the Phoenix Suns, and Siena University. Later, he merged his passion for basketball and data into a sports analytics company that leveraged machine learning and computer vision to track player movements. He helped over 70 Division I basketball programs, two National Champions, and USA Basketball turn complex data into clear insights and championship-winning results.

Today, Matthew applies these same analytical skills in the oil and gas sector as an Integrated Sensor Intelligence Manager at SLB, where he leads complex, data-driven programs to improve operational performance. After providing Permian customers with innovative tank level monitors (TLM) processes that provide clear, real-time insight into chemical inventories, he now oversees more than 11,000 remote sensors across North America.

By adjusting injection rates remotely, or by replacing manual inventories and delayed reporting with live, real-time data, SLB’s TLM program has significantly reduced operational risk and improved safety. Instead of sending personnel to thousands of locations, teams can now monitor assets remotely 24 hours a day, while ensuring chemical injection remains on target.

He continued, “I’ve truly viewed the impact this sensor program has had on an operator’s ability to manage their assets and have seen a significant impact. We have improved injection efficiency upwards of 90% continuous on target injection, aided dollar per barrel of total fluid equivalent or cost-reduction efforts by eliminating over injection, ultimately becoming a more trusted advisor.”
