Saugata Gon, Staff Scientist

With an extensive academic background, Saugata Gon, Staff Scientist, brings a wide range of knowledge and expertise to the team at ChampionX.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from India’s Haldia Institute of Technology, followed by a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. Saugata further advanced his studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he gained a M.S. and PhD in Chemical Engineering, following his research which focused on the topic of nanopatterned polyethylene glycol (PEG) brushes.

Saugata began his professional career with ChampionX in 2011, and moved to Pune, India, to help establish a new research centre as part of the company’s expansion into the country. In 2014, he was transferred to its US facility and moved back to Sugar Land, Texas, where he worked for six years on a variety of different innovative projects. In 2020, Saugata was presented with the opportunity to move to Aberdeen, UK to support the ChampionX Easten Hemisphere team on several new technology deployments, before returning to Sugar Land where he currently contributes to ChampionX’s technological advancements.

Saugata currently specializes in developing various cutting-edge technologies with primary focus in Flow Assurance applications for the Upstream Production Chemical Technology Division of ChampionX. He is passionate about research and is leading various external partnership initiatives at ChampionX to address the emerging challenges in the industry.  Two of Saugata’s papers focusing on his asphaltene research resulting from such external collaboration and partnerships will be presented at PetroPhase 2024 in Mérida, México, from 11-15 August.

He explained: "What I have particularly enjoyed about my experiences at ChampionX is the application side of research. In a very short period of time, I can develop a product or process, see it being recommended to a customer, and the solution working; that's my greatest joy, what I develop scientifically being used successfully in the real application.”

In addition to his technical responsibilities, Saugata is committed to mentoring ChampionX’s upcoming scientists and engineers, regularly providing guidance on research methodologies, troubleshooting, and professional development.
