ChampionX Introduces New Highly Advanced Optical Gas Imaging Camera

THE WOODLANDS, Texas, January 23, 2023 – ChampionX Emissions Technologies, a leading provider of emissions detection solutions for the oil and gas industry, announced it has released a new highly advanced Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera, AURA OGI™.

The AURA OGI™ intelligent, MidWave InfraRed (MWIR) camera captures images with four times higher resolution than other cameras on the market. This innovative technology makes gas leak detection more efficient by using built-in smart routes and navigation. Sensor and metadata encoded into the camera’s OGI image files helps simplify documentation, compliance, and auditability.

David Furry is the former president and founder of Leak Surveys, Inc., the leading provider of helicopter-based optical gas imaging and supplier of LDAR services to the oil and gas industry whose business was acquired by ChampionX in 2021. He is one of the original creators of OGI technology and now leads the ChampionX OGI Group.

"Something like this AURA OGI™ camera has never been seen before,” Furry said. “This is an innovative tool that I believe will revolutionize the way gas leaks are detected and documented.”

Unlike thermometric cameras, AURA OGI™ was developed to mitigate or eliminate the impact of costly, unscheduled downtime. It does not require downtime for annual recalibration, making it a more reliable and cost-effective solution for gas leak detection. If maintenance or repair is required, the units can be serviced by staff based in the United States.

The AURA OGI™ also can “learn and remember” a detailed route around a plant facility. Once a senior OGI technician configures target points for LDAR inspection, the AURA OGI™ retains this data so the unit can guide newer operators through the proper route, collecting the right emissions data. AURA OGI™ captures images and supporting data to verify emission and no-emission events. This robust data provides an audit trail that shows the required LDAR surveys were complete and accurate.

ChampionX introduced the technology at a special invitation-only event for customers on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Houston, TX. The company announced that the technology will be available to the market in Q3 2023.

“ChampionX’s suite of Emissions Technologies solutions keeps growing in breadth and depth as we focus on energy sustainability,” said Saurabh Nitin, ChampionX senior vice president of Emissions Technologies. “Our continuous monitoring solutions are an integral part of our offerings, along with planes, helicopters, drones and now cutting edge OGI cameras.”
